Adding IntegersSAME SIGN RULE:Positive + Positive = Positive5 + 4 = 9Negative + Negative = Negative(- 7) + (- 2) = - 9
DIFFERENT SIGN RULE: Sum of a negative and a positive number: Subtract the numbers and keep the sign of the larger number.
(- 7) + 4 = -3
6 + (-9) = - 3(- 3) + 7 = 45 + ( -3) = 2Subtracting IntegersAdd the opposite and follow the rules of addition:Negative - Positive = Negative: (- 5) - 3 = -5 + (-3) = -8Positive - Negative = Positive + Positive = Positive: 5 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8Negative - Negative = Negative + Positive = (Change double negatives to ADDITION or add the opposite)(-5) - (-3) = ( -5) + 3 = -2(-3) - ( -5) = (-3) + 5 = 2Multiplying IntegersPositive x Positive = Positive: 3 x 2 = 6Negative x Negative = Positive: (-2) x (-8) = 16Negative x Positive = Negative: (-3) x 4 = -12Positive x Negative = Negative: 3 x (-4) = -12Dividing Integers (same rules as multiplying)Positive ÷ Positive = Positive: 12 ÷ 3 = 4Negative ÷ Negative = Positive: (-12) ÷ (-3) = 4Negative ÷ Positive = Negative: (-12) ÷ 3 = -4Positive ÷ Negative = Negative: 12 ÷ (-3) = -4Tips:
- When working with rules for positive (black) and negative (red) numbers, try and think of bank accounts or poker chips to help.
- Using a number line showing both sides of 0 is very helpful to help develop the understanding of working with positive and negative numbers/integers.
